Mississippi Attorney General Opinions

June 5, 1979

The Honorable Trent Lott, MC

Gulfport District Office

Gulfport, Mississippi 39501

Dear Congressman Lott:

Attorney General Summer has received your inquiry dated May 25, 1979 on behalf of Mrs. Geraldine Krohn and has assigned it to me for response, your letter stating:

‘I am taking the liberty of contacting you on behalf of Mrs. Geraldine Krohn of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Mrs. Krohn has inquired about the funding for schools in Jackson. It is her understanding that, at one time, funding for schools was handled by individual beats within the county and that each beat decided on the way in which it would fund its own schools.

‘I would appreciate any information you might be able to give me on this matter in order that I may respond further to her. Thanking you, and with best wishes, I am’

This office is unaware of any factual basis for Mrs. Krohn's ‘understanding’ as expressed in your letter. Historically county schools have been funded by a county-wide levy and are now funded a maximum of twenty-five mills county-wide, with a levy of up to three mills additional being optional with voter approval in an election to that effect.

Thank you for giving this office this opportunity to be of assistance, I remain

Yours very truly,

A.F. Summer, Attorney General.

Richard M. Allen, Special Assistant Attorney General.
