Honorable W. Rayford Jones
City Attorney
Post Office Box 1780
Gulfport, Mississippi 39501
Dear Mr. Jones:
Attorney General A. F. Summer has received your letter of request and has assigned it to this writer for research and reply.
Your letter reads as follows:
“Please advise whether or not, in your opinion, seventeen year olds are permitted to register for voting and whether or not seventeen year olds would be permitted to vote in a special municipal election for mayor on the 25th day of February, 1975.â€
This office has previously held that if one is duly registered thirty days before the first primary and will be eighteen years of age on or before the general election, such person may vote in the primary and general elections. However, with respect to the special municipal election for mayor on February 25th, 1975, it is our opinion that in order for one who is otherwise qualified to be eligible to vote in said election that such person shall have attained the eighteenth birthday on or before the date on which the election is held and shall have duly registered not less than thirty days before the date of such election.
Trusting the above will be of some benefit to you, I am
Very truly yours,
A. F. Summer, Attorney General
